Punk’s Not Dead

Surrounded by Thieves, from Nevada are Brandon Buck, Andy Harrison, Cody Levitt, and Rich Castro. They kick things into high gear with their fast, deep punk rock that will make you want to circle pit and punk-the-rock-out! This punk rock band “delivers music that issues a hard-hitting, yet energetic and melodic statement that stays true to a form of music that today bears little resemblance to that which took over the world in the late 70’s” http://www.reverbnation.com/surroundedbythieves

Speaking of which...
It’s been all over the news: Pussy Riot!

Three women of the Russian punk band, Pussy Riot, were arrested in March on charges of 'hooliganism on the grounds of religious hatred'. They have been denied access to their families (including their young children) ever since. Their arrest and trial is an attempt by the Russian authorities to silence them and is emblematic of the recent crackdown by President Putin and his cronies to stifle free speech in Russia. They were found guilty of hooliganism driven by religious hatred and sentenced to two years in jail, have released a new single called Putin Lights Up the Fires. Breaking news: On Monday, two of the members of Russia's anti-Kremlin punk band Pussy Riot have fled the country to avoid prosecution for staging a protest against Vladimir Putin at a church altar. Prosecutors had sought a three-year prison term, but the women could have faced a maximum of seven years in jail for the 40-second protest.

Amnesty International called the verdict "a bitter blow for freedom of expression".
Here is Pussy Riot’s new release: Putin Lights Up the Fires, video mixed by the Guardian.

Video Wednesday - Preview day Electronic, Folk, and Metal

The Fall is coming and there are so many albums coming and thankfully bands are giving us sneak peeks of their upcoming releases on YouTube.

Blaqk Audio is the eclectic duo comprised of Davey Havok and Jade Pudget on the label “Superball Music”, a label that brings interesting music to the masses.  This duo creates addictive, beat-oriented, dance music that highlights their shared love for classic electronica and modern EDM. The infectious sampler on YouTube  is just a taste of what's to come from the group's new album. This highly anticipated sophomore release is the follow-up to the group's 2007 debut, Cexcells, that made its debut at #18 on the Billboard Top 200 Charts. Blaqk Audio’s “Bright Black Heaven” is due out September 11.   Check Out the preview!

Following the success of their 2010 “…Of War” and 2011 “…Of Exile” albums, comes Scythia’s newest album “For the Bear” set to release this September.

"This year, we are releasing our EP right before we hit the long road across Canada with dates soon to be announced. As Scythia crosses this great nation, our CDs will be available for the first time. We understand that everyone needs to sample our wares and so we are hitting the ground running with one of our favorite tracks as the first single: Sailor's Accolade" says vocalist / guitarist Dave Khan.

The short, but sweet seven-track EP departs from the orchestration and central concept of its predecessors, instead representing a leaner, faster, sharper folk metal machine. Full Preview below:

Free Music Thursday - Time to Go into a Trance

STRFKR, also known simply as Starf*cker, are an electronica band from the great city of Portland. Being in the music business since 2007 they have had great success with their music that will put you in a relaxing trance.

Lyrically, their latest album Reptilians focuses primarily on death and the end of the world, two intertwined subjects at the forefront of songwriter Josh Hodges’ mind following the passing of his grandmother. Though this album is not depressing at all instead it has hooks that are contagious, and music that makes you want to dance.

So next time you are feeling in the mood to dance like a fool or just need music to take you out of this world, turn on STRFKR and blare the crap out of it. You can download the song “Julius” for free off their album Reptilians below. Currently the band is recording more great music so check them out and keep up to date @

Video Wednesday – Laughs, Costumes and Great Music

MCL is back! Actually I work on Vandala Magazine each month with the team. (check it out free @ http://www.vandalaconcepts.com/vandala_concepts_e-zine.html)

Last Night I was watching this show called “Face Off” a American reality television show on the Syfy cable network in which a group of prosthetic make up artists compete against each other to create prostheses such as those found in science fiction and horror films. This is a show that inspires  creativity thus I was in the mood of make up, movies, music  and googled something and ended up on a site called http://bloody-disgusting.com. Many would be shocked that I would be on a site like this but I do have a darker side though I found laughter and a amazing band.

The first video I found was “FedExCup Ad: Band”. After Heavy Musical Festival I thought this would be most appropriate. Also recently my boss mentioned she was asked “don’t those metal guys scare you?”  Reality is metal guys are not what you think they are. Like any genre it varies though I have to say some make me laugh so hard while some are really like the guys in the fed ex video;“The most dangerous band in the world” golf’s. This commercial makes a mockery of the misconceptions of metal music. Heck I know the CEO at Vandala talks gardening with one metal band on a regular bases, what flowers to use, and how to make the vegetable plants bush out more. No I will not mention the band! Have a laugh and don’t judge.

Again I like what I like and genre means nothing to me nor does labels or anything else. So when I stubble upon a band I like I like to tell others about them and this site is full of them.  On this site I found a band similar to Rammstein called “Dimmu Borgir”.  What first caught my attention in the music video "Gateways" was the costumes and makeup. That’s one thing about metal music it has the theatrics and costumes at times that make you say wow and this video is no different. The only disappointment  is the woman’s make up sort of under done in comparison. The music is great and I love the drums, the video rocks and check these guys out.

Heavy MTL Article Sneak Peek: Cannibal Corpse

Looking back at that first day at Heavy- it filled with some awesome death metal. Mid-way through the day I traveled back to the Heavy stage to go check out Cannibal Corpse. If you’re into death metal, they’re a band that should be on your list. Formed in 1988, Cannibal Corpse has right from the beginning been one of the most controversial metal bands. They’ve been known for their gruesome cover art, skin crawling lyrics, and scandalous songs and titles such as “Meat Hook Sodomy”; they’ve even been temporarily prohibited in countries like Australia and Germany. Their set was had intricate compositions consisting of guitar pyrotechnics, adrenaline rushing double kick drums, earth shaking bass lines that literally shook the ground, and the most intense vocals, compliments of George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher. This was a high energy performance that grabbed the audience by the nards and demanded all their attention.

Life of Vandala The Other Side - Evil Squirrels

Evil Squirrels Like Beer And Chocolate Covered Nuts

I am one of those who has “That Luck” you know that type of luck that you laugh at and say wtf.

The other night I let the dogs in off the deck and guess what snuck, in a Squirrel. Right away two 85 pound dogs started the chase. The spice racks knocked over, clean dishes dirtied, baby bottles all over and anything else you can think of got torn up. Even my evening snack was on the floor with paw prints in it. Thankfully I did get the dogs downstairs so I could deal with this varmint but I knew this was only the start.

I texted a friend for advice, after the LOL’s and LMFAO’s she suggested a basket of laundry and nuts to catch him. Only thing I had was a jar of peanut butter and chocolate covered almonds along with a basket of towels. So I put it all by the open patio door (looking back his friends could of came in). In that time I called my husband and with his support of laughter I knew I was on my own though he was going to clean up the mess. While on the phone I looked at the white board I saw something my husband wrote “I love you and I hope things go smoothly”, the irony in that loving message was oozing out.  Oh that good friend was still having a blast and informed me Calgary has a Squirrel problem though her patio door is wide open and no problems. I adore her but I still stand by "I wish a pack of evil squirrels upon you" since I was not laughing and she was having a blast.

I waited a good hour and a half though this Squirrel had no plans of leaving. As I googled about this squirrel this kept coming up - “Introduced Eastern Grey Squirrels are invading the Thompson-Okanagan!” Well this is very obvious information since this creature invaded my home and created disaster valley. The methods to get rid of a squirrel were varied and  I had no means to do any of them. So I went to the old methods.

When I have went camping I have woken up to squirrels at the beer bottles and wine bottles. You could see their paw prints on the bottles clearly. Thus in my hour of need I put out a dish of beer and a dish of wine along with the jar of peanut butter and chocolate nuts. Besides I was opening up a beer any ways. Sadly I fell a sleep though was woken up to the sound of the squirrel; head in the peanut butter jar. As I continued to look he looked right back at me with peanut butter all over his face. I was going to chase him right back through that patio door. He instead grabbed the last chocolate covered almond and ran out the door. The beer was gone along with all the chocolate covered almonds, the peanut butter eaten down, though the wine was still there.  So if you want to catch a squirrel beer, peanut butter and chocolate nuts.

Sadly it was dark and I fell asleep thus no footage. I know how viral that footage would of gone and how much money I could have made. So again this is a evil squirrel and he got drunk on beer, had some nuts and got his face full of peanut butter.  Almost every night he is at the patio door after this with peanut butter still on his face though the other night he looked cleaned up. Each night the dogs go crazy. I even ate ice cream in front of him and he just sat and stared at me with his little evil eyes with a look of "this is war". I have been asked "don't those metal guys in their costumes and make up scare you" my response instead of just a simple no now will be "hell no metal guys have nothing on squirrels"

Free Music Thursday - Soul Music

I was emailed today stating I never put any blues, funk or much with soul in it up. To be honest we do not get a lot of submissions in that genre plus being classically trained and jazz/blues trained  I am very picky. Though today I found The Revelations feat. Tre Williams. Classic R&B, blues and soul mixed into one. “Until You Get Enough Of Me” is one of those songs you grab a glass of wine and look over the lake and relax maybe even dance with your husband since there is such romance in this song. Overall smooth, yet raw you get classic soul music.

The Revelations feat. Tre Williams has a few albums for download on bandcamp along with a sampler. Again download the free one and you like them buy and album and support the artists.

No Video Today Just Bombers, Helicopters and Fire

Well this is the first installment Life of Vandala. As the owner I have been told “it must be stressful running a business.” Yes at times it is like anyone running any business. Though life can be stressful but at times my personal keeps me smiling or it’s just that crazy. I was going to start off with the evil squirrel blog but yesterday we had a fire in the Okanogan. Bombers flying over head, along with helicopters just across the road.

My husband was smelling smoke yesterday afternoon and thought nothing of it since its been smoky out here on and off. As he left for work he noticed lots of smoke, about a acre and a half was on fire very, very, very close. So I called 911 and they told me pack up a bag and be prepared to leave since I have a young child. My husband turned around from his way to work to be here with his family and wait like most of us. I thought I might as well grab the camera! Below are a few photos. I also met a helicopter pilot who was upset he was not called to go to work but for me it was my luck. He was showing me where the concerns were and when the plane was going to drop. Also he was showing me with grass fires what to watch for and why they are so unpredictable. As the bombers and helicopters kept dropping on the fires they slowly got it under control. Today fire fighters are out there making sure there are no hot spots. As we were informed that the fire could of gotten out of control very quickly but we where lucky. Two homes were evacuated and still not allowed back in, the fire made it 10 meters from their homes. 36.5 hectares are burned.

I can say being that close to the action was very interesting, yet terrifying since my home was that close along with my 10 month old daughter. I can also say it is suspected by the ones who live in the area by looking at where the fire started it was a cigarette. Two years ago we had a tiny fire due to a cigarette and again only meters from our neighbors home. It’s called respect, your bad habit is your bad habit thus put the butt out in your car! If you think it makes your car that dirty then think about quitting otherwise do not affect those around you. One little butt in our dry area could make people lose everything in moments, from pictures and a whole life can go up in flames because that one selfish act. You may even kill someone or a someone’s pet so think before you throw a cigarette butt out. On a lighter note NEXT WEEK on Monday I will bring you the tale of the evil squirrel who attack!

If you are unfamiliar with their music- GET familiar! If you are but have never seen them live- DO!

All Else Fails-Breaking Acclaim - Season 1 / Episode 3 "It's In My Mouth"

If you haven’t watched the previous Breaking Acclaim video I strongly urge you to check them out. Barrett Klesko from Fade Back Studio United, directed, wrote and edited a series of videos that follow the adventures of the metal band All Else Fails. They’re funny as all hell, and artsy in an unpretentious and non-ironic way.

Episode 3 “It’s In My Mouth” starts off with the band figuring out the cost of the ferry from Vancouver. After realizing it’s really expensive, they decide to smuggle three of their band members in their trailer.

Heavy MTL Countdown

Heavy Mtl is in a 3 days, buy your tickets and join me there! The line-up is absolutely insane, and I personally can’t wait to see Marilyn Manson at the Scene Heavy MTL stage at 18:45. Here’s a music video called No Reflection straight from his new album ‘Born Vilain’. If you have never seen any of his videos before I must warn it is very graphic (Sex, nudity, and violence).

Here’s also an interview with the man himself about his new album and comeback. I can’t be more happier that he has return with such a powerful album that touches on subjects that are sociologically important. It’s always interesting listening to Marilyn being interviewed; he is not only extremely intelligent and incredibly insightful, but is one of the most relatable people in the music industry.

I will be out at Heavy Montreal covering the festival so watch for a spread with photos and details of the festival in Septembers Vandala Magazine. Until then Check out my coverage of Vans Warped tour in Augusts Vandala Magazine along with music reviews and my interview with RICH WARD of FOZZY.  CLICK HERE
