Canadian Radio Music Awards - Nothing Special Again

So The Canadian Radio Music Awards are pleased to announce the nominations for the 15th Annual Edition and I have to say it is nothing special. People wonder why Nickelback has the fame they do as the Canadian Rockers, the nominations explain why.

There is for a fact tons of amazing Canadian Talent yet so much of it does not get the exposure it needs. "A little fame goes a long ways", and to the nomination for awards. Sheep Dogs are nominated since they are the new band on the mainstream beat. The annoying Alyssa Reid, along with Shawn Desmen, Fefe Dobson and of course Hedley are also nominated. These artists get the radio play because of the little fame turning into a lot of fame or on a large label. Let's face it 15 minutes of fame lasting years is the the fad.

Radio is hard to get played on as a independent artist and even harder to get the numbers to be nominated for these awards. You are competing with labels with large budgets and most of all  they have power in radio. From my days in working in radio you are up against Nickelback, Hedley and a few others for Canadian content airplay. Then some big name like Madonna, or let's say Rhianna comes out with a new song they will get there 300 - 400 rotations because of their name and a huge label behind them. Their song maybe the worst song possible but it will get played.-  I.e. Wind up by Gwen Stefani, Music directors hated it but hat to play it. Then we cannot add in campus radio spins and many independent radio plays to the total numbers because it is not tracked through things like Nielsen BDS;  thus an artist's does not have exact number of spins. It's how radio works period. So this is how we have a poor turnout for nominations. It not a fair playing field for independent artists, maybe that's why these awards in music mean less and less every year. There just isn't much choice put out there for the nominations and a even less for the so called "fan's choice".
