On the Red Carpet at the Juno Awards

For the biggest night in Canadian music the hottest stars and musicians walked the red carpet at the Air Canada Center in Toronto. Suited up for the event was hip hop artist Drake, the host of this years 2011 Juno Awards. For male groups Barenaked Ladies, Finger Eleven and Billy Talent, ties, glasses, blazers and leather jackets were worn. Posed among Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers on the carpet were also beautifully gowned women. This includes Metric member Emily Haines, who looked fresh in a short white dress and long silver necklace, but it was country star Shania Twain stole the scene with a dazzling sleeveless gown in shades of black, white and silver.

Death From Above 1979 – Sparking Chaos at SXSW

South By Southwest (SXSW), one of the biggest and most important music festivals took place this past weekend in Austin, Texas. The festival featured many live acts including The Strokes, Arcade Fire and Kanye West. But one band that literally tore things apart was Toronto duo, Death From Above 1979.

Back in 2006, drummer Sebastien Grainger and bassist Jesse Keeler broke things off and went their separate ways. But earlier this year, the duo announced that they would be reuniting, and playing at SXSW. This had the music industry and fans completely pumped for the event. But what actually happened at SXSW was truly chaotic.

Death From Above 1979 took to the stage Saturday evening and blazed through a set of heavy distortion bass and pounding drums, making for a heavy-dance punk atmosphere. Then after their set, at the Beauty Bar Backyard – which was incredibly tiny, a riot took place. Yes, a riot!

Swarms of fans tore down a chain link fence in excitement. People in the riot also got into altercations with riot police on horseback. And as seen in some videos on You tube, police didn’t hold back. So what a way for Death From Above 1979 to make their way back into the music scene. It’s actually too bad because they played very well but are going to be remembered at SXSW for the post-performance riot. But what can they do, publicity is publicity.

Meliah, Vancouver’s Delight

In this world of aspiring singer-song writers it has become harder and harder to standout from the crowd. However, by stirring up an interesting blend of genres accompanied by a spoonful of playfulness, and heartfelt lyrics, Meliah proves that it can be done.

Meliah is a girl-duo consisting of main song writer, Melissa Endean and producer, Leah Mertz. On recording they play indie-pop with influences from country, hip-hop and electronica, creating a unique, but still an accessible sound that you, your cat, and your grandma could chill to. Seeing them live however is a completely different animal. When on stage they play the acoustic guitar and piano, while both of them sing beautifully in harmony. Usually it is an intimate performance, stripped down to the core instruments highlighting their impeccable musicianship, and their undeniable chemistry. The intimacy also adds to the experience by making the music more personal, developing an honest relationship between the artist and the audience.

The coupling of the two ravishing, gravitational personalities complementing each other so well, creating such serene music is a delightful display to see and hear. Their EP is coming out soon, check for more info on their facebook, and twitter!

Willow Smith, a Rebel With Class

Rising star, Willow Smith debuted her refreshing confidence with synth-style hit, "Whip My Hair”, proving she has the voice power and style to match her outstanding personality and charisma. Willow's second single, “21st Century Girl” is just about that, showing her young fans they can be individuals with age-appropriate style.

The music video begins with an old woman who draws miss Smith from the sands of a desert. Emerging in a hooded tan jumpsuit, Willow takes a look around and pulls a butterfly from the earth. Thus begins this pop mix hit as she rips off her suit revealing her next look. Smith shows off her swagga in a red, yellow and plaid outfit as she runs through the desert. Pulling items and then a city from the sand with other kids at her side, Willow changes into her third outfit: leopard tights, yellow shorts and a sassy T-shirt that reads, "Boys Need Training."

The video ends with Willow whispering to a baby girl, who then also pulls a butterfly from the ground, passing on the power of the 21st Century girl. Willow’s trademark style and message will keep everyone talking, but about something good: an independent girl with sass.

The Japanese Earthquake of 2011 Facts & How You Can Help

On the afternoon of March 11th (Japanese time), a Magnitude 8.9 earthquake struck the north east side of Japan. Japan, and the eastern side of it has been devastated not just by this earthquake and it's aftershocks. The high tsunami (actual height varied) struck the north-eastern Japanese coastline in the wake of the earthquake, sweeping homes and vehicles inland.  Due to the damage from the earthquakes and tsunamis, not only has there been a severe loss of life and damage to property, but there are also concerns with a total of 5 nuclear reactors at 2 different power plants in Fukushima and Daichi prefectures, respectively. While there is no threat of explosion due to the reactors' light water design, there has been a loss of power and there is the risk of possible leakage of radioactive steam into the atmosphere. In addition to this, the city of Sendai has been the hardest hit, being closest to the epicenter of the quake, and there are reports of fires, including at an oil refinery, all along the north-eastern coast of Japan.

If you have friends or family in Japan that you haven't heard from, then Google has stepped up to the plate with its People-Finder app, which can be accessed at http://japan.person-finder.appspot.com/ for those of you who are searching or have information. Enter the name of the person you're looking for, or create a profile for them in the event they are tracked down and you will be contacted.

This is a terrible disaster to befall a great country, and there are ways to help you can find them everywhere. Here are a few ways:

1) You can go to the Red Cross' website at http://www.redcross.ca/  or http://www.redcross.org/

MF GREENS The Monthly Find – The Strokes

Hello there, to all of you music lovers, hope you are all fine and dandy. And if you are feeling anything like I am, you are probably wondering what great band to immerse yourself with next. Never fear, I have the answer for you, and it is the legendary Strokes.

Yes! You read correctly, The Strokes are back and into the swing of things (they have been on a several year long hiatus) and last weekend they rocked SNL. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDL_qDZmE7M) But just last month, the New York City band released the first track from their upcoming album, “Angles.” The track is called “Under Cover Of Darkness,” and sums up The Strokes in a nut shell. It features the band’s signature raw vocals, dual melodic guitar riffs and rock n roll rhythm.

The band’s fourth studio album will hit stores on March 22nd, and it is much anticipated by fans and the music industry. This is because The Strokes are modern day rock n rollers and punks who actually have something to say. Their debut album, “Is This It” was ranked number two on Rolling Stone Magazine’s top albums of the past decade and everything they have made since is just as good (in my opinion).

So what I am suggesting is that you catch up on your Strokes listening before the new album comes out. Check out “Is This It,” “Room On Fire,” and “First Impressions Of Earth,” you will not be disappointed. And by the sounds of it, “Angles” is going to be just as good as all The Strokes’ past work.

So like always, don’t be afraid to press that repeat button. And remember to keep rocking,

Lokrendis - Vancouver Death-Thrash Metal Band

Vancouver death-thrash metal band, Lokrendis is an aggressive quintet that features intricate guitar leads and deep barking growls. The scarred vocal approach, flashy, but chunky guitars, clear double kicks, bold, often distorted bass all are crucial to Lokrendis’ pulverizing sound. However, these guys have a softer side as well, often featuring clean interludes or breaks. Their straight forward metal assault varied by these melodic sections makes for songs that are interesting to listen to rather than just hammering away at your ears the whole time, which is what you would expect with most death-thrash metal out there. Whether it’s on recording or on stage, if you are looking for a tight, heavy, over the top, but dynamic band to mosh to, check out Lokrendis.

Thrash & Burn - March Edition

Greetings, True Believers! The time has come to march forward into the spring, and what a spring we have ahead of us. Gross Misconduct is re-emerging from their winter hibernation with a new bass player in tow, Three Inches of Blood has been nominated for a Canadian Independent Music Award, and the sun is shining. We've had several quality metal releases already this year, and the tours are already starting to hit fast and furious. This is where we're going to start things off.

A hearty thrashing goes to my good friend, Kristina "Killkrist" VanBlyderveen, of Killkrist Productions. A long time promoter in the Okanagan Valley here in BC, Killkrist was responsible for bringing bands like Nevermore, Kataklysm, and Zimmer's Hole to Kelowna during the late 1990s and early 2000s, until a series of personal tragedies struck and forced her to take a hiatus, starting with the death of her husband, Matt, from cancer. After taking the time to heal and get things back in order for herself and her family, Kristina has come back in a big way, by staging a sell-out show on March 3rd in Kelowna, featuring the return of Kataklysm to the Okanagan on their current headlinging tour with All Shall Perish and Abysmal Dawn (who were reviewed and given high praise in this month's VC EZine!). It was very difficult for her to pull off, due to issues with Kelowna's notoriously fickle venue management forcing her to change locations 3 times. Still, she kept her ticketbuyers abreast of the situation with instant facebook updates, and made everything work. "What a struggle it was, but sooo worth it! Kataklysm did it once again for me. To Matt, my kids, the fans, and the scene, thank you big time!" She replied, when asked for comment about the show. No, Kristina, thank YOU for your tireless efforts in trying to keep the metal flowing in the B.C. interior!

Now for the burning: Hypopcrisy! No, I'm not bagging on the band Hypocrisy for their ambitious but ill-thought out Catch 22 album, but the pop stars who are only now "donating" the money they recieved performing for well-known tyranical dictator, madman, and all around evil guy, Moamar Ghadafhi, and his family. Singers like Nelly Furtado, Usher, and Mariah Carey have all been hired to perform for the Libyan despot ad his clan over the past few years, when knowledge of his atrocities, his complicity in the bombing of a plane over Locherbie, Scotland, and human rights abuses was all common, but ignored knowledge. It merely would have taken opening up a newspaper to see these things, but these stars ignored it, took the money, and ran. Only now, when the world can no longer ignore the atrocities happening as Ghadafhi desperately clings to power, ordering mercenaries to carry out airstrikes on his own citizenry who just want a chance to work and be free, do they even think, "Oh, maybe we shouldn't have done that?" Bullshit! You pathetically attempt to look socially conscious by giving back money you happily accepted when offered, when you should have done the right thing in the first place and said, "No!" Get stuffed, you overpaid, morally and ethically bankrupt pieces of excrement! Giving back dirty money doesn't absolve you of guilt for taking it in the first place.

You can't claim ignorance when you take money from bad sources. If you know that the source of your money is dirty, you have moral responsibiolity not to take it. We see this happening a lot today, not just from celebrities, but from banks, casinos, and real estate agencies. There are consequences for doing this, maybe not here, but maybe after death. It's a matter of reaping what you sow, and even through bad times, if you do the right thing, good will come of it eventually. Just look at Killkrist, who has weathered storms, continues to do so, and continues to do the right thing. Her rewards may not necessarily be financial, but sometimes the intangible rewards are the best. Food for thought...

Godspeed and Party on,

Jé-Pé

Radiohead Release New Music Video for Lotus Flower

Radiohead has done it again! They have managed to create another flawless album, titled “The King Of Limbs,” and release another fantastic music video. This time, it’s in black and white and impossible to turn away from.

The video is for the song “Lotus Flower” and features Thom Yorke, lead singer, dancing for five minutes straight, in front of what appears to be a warehouse wall. Now, Yorke is just not simply dancing. He is moving wildly and almost seizure like, wearing a black top-hat, white dress shirt and black skin tight jeans. He is also singing along to the song and clapping like a wild man. And trust me, this could not be more awesome.

Also, if you have ever wondered how to dance to the music of Radiohead, my advice is to watch this music video. It is the equivalent to a one-on-one dancing lesson from Yorke, which I would imagine is hard to come by these days. As for the music, it’s another Radiohead classic. There is Yorke’s signature vocals, the drum machine beat, thick bass and melodic guitar work.

So with each of these elements combined, Radiohead not only have another fantastic song on their hands, they also have another fantastic video. They can do no wrong.
